I started 2021 with an Ocular Migraine, where my eye waters and I have a stonking headache. Its linked to my Psoriatic Arthritis (my immune system attacking healthy cells in my eyes) and can last a day or several. So yesterday morning at 5am I was popping painkillers with my first (and only) coffee of the day.
I’ve cut out as much caffeine as I dare, to help me sleep. Last year I started taking Magnesium, which really helped (I’m still taking it), but just recently I’ve been waking up really early and then can’t get back to sleep.
Last week I thought I’d try Gretchen Rubin’s approach (from The Happiness Project) as I’m reading it again. Two things stood out:
- Keep the bedroom slightly chilly
- Make the room dark
I’ve never tried either of these “tips” before, so I gave it a go. The first night I slept for 7 hours! The second night 6…but now it seems I’m back to waking up after 4-5 hours *slumps*. But I’m going to persevere, and in the meantime theres nothing wrong with a nap during the day…it’s not like I have much else to do lol (we’re in Tier 4 here in Kent).
I’ve always fought the “fatigue” side of my illness. Refusing to believe that being constantly sleepy is anything more than just being tired. But as time goes on I’m getting more worn out, and now I find I cant sit on my sofa at all without falling asleep (no matter how much sleep I’ve had the night before or the time of day).
So lets hope my start to the new year isn’t an indication to how the rest of it will pan out lol. I think I need to accept that having a nap every day isn’t defeat, it just may well be how I have to start living my life from now on.
